7 Resolutions You Should Make For Summer

By Elana Goodwin on May 17, 2015

Forget New Year’s — summer is the perfect time to finally get around to doing all the things you said you wanted to in your New Year’s resolutions. Whether you’re free for the summer, taking summer classes, or working at an internship, you can still make a list of summer resolutions and actually follow through. Here are seven great summer resolutions to undertake.

1. Get Healthy. Summer is the perfect time to get healthy — both by exercising and by eating right. Join a gym, sign up for a yoga or zumba class, or take advantage of the nice weather by jogging outside or taking a bike ride. To really motivate yourself, get a friend to make this resolution with you and use each other for encouragement and as a work-out buddy. With lots of great veggies and fruits in season, you can also get healthy by resolving to eat healthier and better this summer.

2. Get Artsy. During the summer, there are lots of opportunities to embrace your artsy side. There are always lots of local outdoor art shows taking place, usually on the weekends, that you can go to and look at the various artwork, and maybe even indulge and buy something! You can also take an artsy summer class, like photography, or look into what other classes your local community college might be offering. Whatever you do, with lots of free time in the summer, you can finally explore your artsy side that you may not have the time to tap into when you’re busy at school.

3. Get Certified. Summer’s a great time to get certification — as you’ve probably got the time to undergo whatever training you may need to earn certification, plus many certification classes are held during the summer months. Depending on your interests, summer might be the perfect opportunity to become a lifeguard or fitness instructor, or become certified in CPR. Look into local classes and opportunities to earn certification near you; plus, those certifications may even be able to help you land a job on campus when you return in the fall.

4. Get Cultured.Another great resolution for summer is to become more cultured and well-rounded. Visit your local museums, some of which may have free days or student discounts (plus free air conditioning!), and educate yourself. If you’re more dedicated, resolve to learn a new language this summer — you can look into classes, Rosetta Stone, make a bilingual friend teach you, or vow to teach yourself via the internet. Vamonos — there’s no time like the present.

5. Get Binge-Watching. Binge-watching isn’t just a summer resolution or activity, but summer may allow you to take on a bigger series than you could indulge in during the school year. Pick a series that was on air for more than six seasons or so, like “Friends,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Parks and Recreation” “Smallville,” or “24.” Or if you’re feeling really ambitious, pick a couple long-running TV shows and whip through them one after the other. It’s definitely time well spent.

6. Get Volunteering. This summer, volunteer somewhere and fulfill that resolution we all make to be a better person. Look into volunteer opportunities at your local nursing home, a nearby hospital, your county animal shelter, or another place you’re passionate about and commit to a weekly visit or whenever your schedule may allow. It’s a resolution that will benefit not only you, but others as well.

7. Get Exploring. Want to go places? Summer is a great time for a road trip — whether it’s with friends, family, or even by yourself. Pick somewhere within driving distance that you’ve always wanted to go to and plan a mini-vacation or long weekend, or if your bank account is more flush, plan a more expensive trip to somewhere further away and book yourself a flight and hotel. Become a real traveler this summer and see some awesome sights, have some amazing experiences, and take some cool pictures — you’ll remember this summer long after you’re back to the daily school grind. No matter what you end up doing, summer is a great time to do the things you’ve put off doing during the year since you were busy with class and schoolwork. Make sure to actually relax on your summer vacation and try to fulfill some of your resolutions to make the most of your summer.
